How to escape side control
From JiuJitsuForums Wiki
The following is my bread and butter method to escape side control. Read it carefully and slowly if you are having trouble escaping side control
Ill use side control escape as an example. (guy on your right)
You start with one forearm on their hip bone and your left hand on their left shoulder with your forearm across their throat.
Were going to build the frame using your elbows.
Bring your feet to your butt.... Now you bridge hard up onto your right shoulder, such that your left shoulder is nearly pointing straight at the ceiling. As you bridge DO NOT push with your arms. Your arms should be relaxed and your elbows should stay close to your body. This is not the time to extend.
NOW... the moment your'e done bridging as far as you can go, its time to set your "frame" as you hip out. Your ELBOWS will remain *stuck* to your opponent. Your hands should not be pushing at all. Your arms will stay in a folded position such that your hands are near your head.
Try this.... cover your ears with your hands such that your elbows are straight in front of you and low. Now lift your elbows straight up above your head. That is the motion you will use.
Ok... now you hip out/shrimp hard. AS YOU DO SO, you will "leave your elbows behind". This is your frame. Again, dont extend your arms, just "stiff arm" your opponent as you leave your elbows behind. The motion will feel like you are raising your elbows above your head, but you are really moving your hips away that causes this motion. You are NOT pushing with your elbows, you are merely leaving them in place and bracing as your body moves way, a critical point.
Now you are left hip'd out, with a strong frame using your elbows to prevent your opponent from following you. You will have a ton of space to bring that knee through and replace guard if you did it right.
This all happens very fast and smoothly. Read I wrote very slowly and visualize and you may see what im trying to say
Good luck! - JackJitsu
