I'm considering joining either the Air Force Reserves or the Air National Guard. But I don't really know the difference between the two. Other than the AF Reserve is tied to the the AF and the Guard is run by the state. My main reasons for wanting to join are the A.R.T programs, retirement, and money for college. I've been an aircraft electrician for the last four years. I work on C-130's and have a certificate from a technical college. I'd like to stay in the avionics or electrical field. I'd really like to get away from the actual electrician/mechanic aspect of the job and get more into the systems work. Since that's what I originally went to school for.

So what do you military guys think? How hard is it to land an A.R.T position when competing against guys with veterans preference? Will my current schooling and work experience give me any help with getting those positions? What's the major difference in the AF Reserve and the Guard? I know this is all s*** I can ask a recruiter but the recruiter here is a dumb ass. I watched my wife deal with the day to day annoyance of dealing with him. Oh by the way I took the ASVAB a couple years ago and missed like three questions. So let's go ahead and assume I can qualify for the avionics positions. Plus, I'm married and I have a daughter. I currently work on an AF base that has both Guard posts and a huge Reserve post. So I'd really really really like to come back home and do my time here or somewhere close here in GA.

The future prospect of living off taxpayers is not as bright as they would have you believe. Our Trillions of dollars in national debt is unsustainable. It won't last.

Move into the private world for long-term success.

Me and one of the guys from my school were discussing this yesterday - I don't know the exact current figure but every man, woman, and child in the US owes a LOT of money

In 2008 the National Debt was around 10 trillion
Quote:
The national debt equates to $30,400 per person U.S. population, or $60,100 per member of the U.S. working population,[33] as of February 2008.

Today the national debt is over 14 trillion so the figure is much higher.

I looked over at my son and said - you owe the government over $35,000 bucks - what do you think about that? His eyes just got very big.

I agree we are unsustainable and something WILL eventually give.

Lol. Yeah like investing in any type of corporation or private industry is that much safer. Right.......

I'll take my free education and benefits while I can get em. And I'll use whatever I learn in the military to survive if the s*** hits the fan down the road.

Thanks for the opinions guys. But I'm really looking for someone to offer some kind of insight into the pros and cons between the two.

No, invest in You. Start building a career path in private industry now, while you can. 10 years from now retired government avionics pros will be managing QuickieLube franchises because they know nothing about how to work in the private world.

The public gravy train is heading towards a wall. I hate to be harsh, but 10 years from now you won't be able to complain that nobody told you funding would dry up.

Click here to Google Houston Dallas Waco avionics.

Plenty of honest work there.
