We were doing drills. One guy starts from backmount, other has to escape. Two minutes per round. Rear collar choke. The last thing I heard was "protect your neck!" I should have tapped. _________________ "Only a warrior chooses pacifism; others are condemned to it."

IM me sometime, I'd love to talk!
For me, cross collar chokes have always been a weakness. Not sure why. So is the finishing part of an arm bar, but anything having to do with my legs and holding.. GAME ON lol I still have a long ways to go, though. ;) _________________ I AM the child your parents warned you about.
I'm sure I blacked out from one last night too. We were doing the same drill. The guy got his grip on my Gi early and I tried to defend from best I could but I ended up blacking out and seeing stars .... it was kinda silly because the pressure wasn't as deep or tight as I initially thought.
I'd been rolling with the blue and purple belts and obviously got wiped out ... but they got me with some good gi chokes and I tapped early enough even if I did try and struggle out of them.
It was really strange. Perhaps it was like a cumulative effect or something?
I've been choked out once and *nearly* choked out another time.
The first was when I just started BJJ, maybe 4-5 weeks into my training. I was actually on business travel in San Jose and I brought my gi so I could take a class out there. I was rolling with the blue belt and they started on their knees, which was unfamiliar to me. The guy reached out and grabbed my collar but I was far enough that his arm had to be fully extended to reach it. Being so far away, I didn't think I was in any real danger, it was just a grip. I don't know exactly what he did next but thinking that I was safe I didn't tap very quickly. As I started to go I *thought* I tapped but I'm not really sure.
I entered this dream state where I noticed that I had lost vision but figured I'd push on and do my best to win anyway. As my vision came back to me I saw somebody and went straight for the single leg. As I got my arms around it I noticed the black belt he was wearing and stopped.
It turns out the instructor saw my neck "in a weird position" and told the guy I was rolling with to stop. When he did I must have slumped to the ground. As soon as they explained that to me I said, "I'm ok, let's roll."
The instructor said, "No man, you take a seat by the wall."
I replied, "No I'm fine. Let's go."
He said, "No."
I pushed, "No, let's go."
He finished it with, "There is no where to go. Just take a 5 minute break."
It turns out he was right. After about 10 minutes I rolled again but I had a headache and I wasn't myself. It's hard to explain but I felt like I was a little dumber for the rest of the night. I just didn't process the world around me quite as well. I drove back to my hotel and when I got there I had a huge feeling of relief. While not as extreme, I felt a little like a drunk driver that had just made it home without anybody getting hurt. (For the record, I haven't done that since I was a dumb 17 year old. I'm 34 now.) I was relieved that everything was going to work out and all I needed to do from that point was to lay in bed and get better. I was fine the next morning. The weirdest thing about it was that I felt like I wasn't in the club. Everybody had this span of time in their memory except me. I missed a piece of time while I was with people and that's unsettling.
The other time I was nearly choked out we were doing a takedown drill. Basically, if you win the takedown you win, if you get a standing sub you win. When the fight hits the ground the winner stays in the circle to face the next opponent. I went for a double leg (head to the side) but didn't really get it. He went for a guillotine but I still owned a leg. It became a battle to see if I could win the takedown before his choke worked and neither of us were letting up.
Well, it was the first time I really understood what tunnel vision is like. The whole world started to close in and I could only see what was straight in front of me. I tapped and he let go right away. I dropped to my knees but I wasn't fully out. I just needed a second or two, literally, to regain my senses. For another few minutes I saw colors in front of me, like a mild version of looking at the sun. After that I was totally fine. I didn't suffer any of the effects that I had after being fully choked out in the first story.
Anyway, welcome to the club. _________________ I can kick BJ Penn's assin ping pong
I choked a guy out in the jail before. Sometimes it works better for me if the guy is taller because if I get my arm in the right position, all I have to do is hang, and that's 180 lbs of hanging fat to apply to the arteries lol When I choked him out I was like Dammmn.... so THAT'S what it looks like when you choke someone out in person LOL _________________ I AM the child your parents warned you about.
I think everyone at least once should allow themselves to be choked out. Have someone watch over, instead of calling for a tap, to see how it affects their body. I know this might not be a good idea, but it should allow you to better your response should it be close to happening.
Argh, I don't know about that. We have been doing six different chokes today, and they all hurt the neck. Ouch. Your partner's wrist or shin just digs into your soft neck. I don't think I want that pain for as long as it takes for me to pass out.

Meh. If you get a good RNC, it doesn't really hurt them to be choked. Not bruise-hurt anyway.
The effects vanguard has described have been well documented by fighter jet pilots when they black out in high G manuevers.
Its true, your IQ drops for a long time after you pass out. For the first 30 minutes or so you are a retard after being choked out It slowly comes back after that but take a couple of hours to recover 100%. My memory is fuzzy on the exact timing.
I hate the feeling of being choked out.... I get such a head ache. I don't even like being in RNC because my head starts to hurt from the pressure that's builds. I would much rather give them an armbar instead.
