| I take a shower before class and after. I have the time so I figure it is polite to be fresh for my training partner. Anyone else do this, is it a good idea or bad? |

After one day when I nearly had to tap out to a classmate's bad breath, I became concerned about the state of my own breath- and started brushing my teeth right before class. | We brush the teeth and use Listerine. I understand if it is impossible to go home before going to the mats. |

I have one of those little mini travel toothbrushes with a case, and sample size toothpaste. It only takes a minute to do a quick pass in the bathroom before lineup....... and then you know that if your partner passes out, it's your choking skills and not your halitosis. _________________ Even some of the best people I know live by the “I just wanna do my own little thing.” Satisfied with the happy little island they created for themselves in the middle of the ocean of the surrounding disharmony, they look at life from their seat in the audience. I never shower before class. If your teammate has any fungal or bacterial infection, you're MUCH more likely to catch it if you have recently washed (clearing the natural fauna off your body).
That doesn't mean I come stinky to class, but I won't shower an hour or two before, no. _________________ ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]

^^^THIS. Only shower right before class if you are not clean or are stinky.
You want your natural skin oils and "good" bacteria on your skin protecting you.
Shower as soon after class as possible every time though. _________________ New to this site? Please review the rules

| I read a little about Defense Soap. Anyone out there use a particular brand that you think is better? $8 a bar is a lot so looking for any kind of input before buying some. |

this...one dose of breath from someone cutting weight was enough for me. I brush and rinse right before I walk out the door and I chew some gum on my way to class.
I also carry my mouth guard in a little tupperware container of Listerine. The one downside is partners smelling the mouthwash during a roll and thinking I'm drunk on the mats...but it could be worse. _________________ "you let go of that grip and your mother falls off of a cliff....and dies" - Kurt Osiander |

A good friend of mine who is a microbiologist said you should not make it a habit to shower with anti-bacterial soaps (OK for hand washing) the bacteria on your body will build resistance to it.
I think it is good to have a bar of Defense soap around for when there is an outbreak at the gym or you catch something. But I would not use it on a day to day basis. _________________ -

| In a joking manner, my wife is always pointing out how fishy and suspicious it is that I have to "freshen up" before headed to class. |

| I never understood why defense soap would be better than just using alcohol or hydrogen peroxide on open wounds after training and using regular body wash/soap ?? |

Defense soap is advertised strongly, but I honestly think it's useless.
If you have an infection, there are already ways to deal with it. And killing bacteria on you with soap if you don't have any obvious infections, well.... that's just only killing your natural fauna, which will make it more likely to catch an infection of more dangerous bacteria from someone else.
Do you ever wonder how in some 3rd world countries, they have gyms that are NEVER washed, people who don't wash their kimonos more than once a week and are dirty themselves, yet no one ever gets skin infections? _________________ ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]

I use it and I love it.
If you buy it by the gallon, its 50% cheaper by volume (for the liquid stuff, I feel its superior to bar soap).
I bought a gallon exactly 11 months ago and I've still got about 1/3 of the gallon left. _________________

How often do you guys wash your Gis? I wash mine after every time I hit the mats. Is that too often?
I was also thinking about ordering a bar of Defense Soap... After a little over two years of training i've had Impetigo and ring worm.. |
