I roll with people based on which list they are at the moment.

- People that don't care about taps(good training partners) : I let them try stuff, get positions if they have it right.
- People I don't know : I'm on the defensive for most of the roll, mostly in open guard, feeling their game out.
- Mean/Aggressive/Cocky people : I bring out my A-game, and go into smash mode.
- People I simply just avoid for my own safety.

Do you have some sort of list like that?

Or are there really people out there who are always nice to everybody ?

hell yeah fool

i have people that i heel hook, kneebar, footlock and wristlock and those that i do not.

those who i play defense with like guard and those who i try to get on top and tap.

some of it is by default because my instructor runs me the f*** over... how am i supposed to dictate where the fight ends up... i am forced to defend my ass.

You heel hook people in your class? You sound like "that guy"... remind me never to roll with you.

But to the original question, I guess you could say I go off of a list. There are a couple people that I avoid because I dont want to get injured and there are those that I seek out cause they really help me a lot in rolls.

don't get me wrong. there is only a small circle of motherfuckers that i do this with. the vast majority i do not even bother to do this with.

cause how are you gonna be good at heel hooks / knee bars /wrist locks if you don't practice them? my advice for you is to find a selective trusted few who you can do this with.

Wow! I'm only new, and I already have one of those lists. Mine includes,

-people who smash me.
-people I try to survive more than 5 minutes with.
-people with whom I win some/lose some.
-people I try new stuff on.
-people who I refuse to roll with.

Honestly, I havent found much merit in any of the 7 posts you have made. Im starting to think you are a troll. I still wouldnt apply heel hooks/wrist locks during live rolling. I may drill them but thats about it. Not worth hurting a fellow training partner or getting hurt over yourself.

We have a small group of leg/foot/ankle lock guys in the gym that all heelhook, kneebar, toehold, etc... each other. I'm one of them. Some of us have previous Sambo experience, others have experience from no-gi gyms where all that stuff is normal. We all know WTF we're doing with it. So JUST because someone uses heelhooks within a small group that doesn't automatically make them douchebags.

My gym is like this, too - there are a select few of us that know (and will play with) leglocks.

I think the problem is how srbjj talks about them, not that he's doing them. It's all in the presentation.

I run a no-gi class. For heelhooks I have a catch and release policy, all other leglocks are fair game. Never been an injury related to leglocks.

I try to improve myself with every roll. I try my game out on everyone and typically let my training partners dictate the pace of the roll.

I've found my game has improved drastically in the last 8 months due to this methodology.

As a bigger guy (the biggest who consistently trains actually) I work to be as technical, smooth and fun to roll with as possible.

I have no list. I roll as hard as my partner does or at least try too. As for ankle and foot locks I only go after them again if my partner is going for them.

1) People I can practice my more difficult moves with that I never/rarely hit (white belts) with partners equal or more advanced than me.

2) Low to mid blue belts that I can just flow with. When rolling is just that, rolling. Subs are here and there, but I am focusing on set ups while defending against an equally skilled partner. It’s slowed down because of the control shown by both of us so I can think some and I don't have to worry about my partner going all spazzy on me. It's a lot like chess when rolling with this group.

3) 4 Stripe blue belts and above... surviving & learning. For some reason I focus so much more on defense than offense, which is something that I'm desperately trying to unlearn. I find myself focusing on "not giving something up too easy" that I play far too safe. However, I try to learn and my "victories" when rolling with this group would be when I escape a bad situation with good technique (and not wind up in a worse situation because your partner was baiting you, lol).

Im not saying you are a douche for slapping on leg locks, but like clinzy said, the way he comes across about them seems a little pompous. Ill play with knee bars and ankle locks with my friends who are equal or higher belts but I guess I am still too afraid to try and heel hook someone in a live roll. To me it doesnt seem worth the risk, atleast right now, to try and apply them.

Yeah I do the same. When I roll with white belts I try out my new guards (DLR, spider) that I've been working on. When I roll with blue belts I bring my A game and make the roll as legit as possible. When I roll with higher level belts that I know, I try and not get caught in the submissions that they like or that they normally catch me in; for ones that I don't know I just try and survive as long as possible.

I agree, sounds like a troll to me.
