Yes that is Carlos "Caique" Elias and he's our affiliate instructor. He did a seminar here the weekend before he got that from Rickson. He's a really great guy and has some awesome stories about growing up with the Gracies. He came out to eat with a few of us after the seminar and just chatted up like any normal guy. I think the honor of the new belt kind of came as a surprise to him. All of a sudden I think Rickson just called him and told him to come to Rio. I think he was pretty thrilled and had his pictures up on his facebook a few days later. Not much after he got the acceptance to be the affiliate for UCLA Bjj club. So I guess you are one of our sister schools, kinda cool. Does his son Pedro ever teach there?

Here's a better picture of it from the seminar we had here.. now that belt is officially retired. It was the original black belt he received at the first Gracie academy in Brazil. That belt was older than some of the IU students he was teaching at the seminar. You always hear the story about how the old school way was just wear the belt until it turned black on it's own... well he wore that black belt until it turned to white again.

Wow- my head teacher's black belt is not that old yet, but it's starting to look like that around the edges!
