Today's class sucked (well, I SUCKED).

Short story for those who don't wanna read: I lost to zero stripe white belt, who ezekiel choked me INSIDE MY GUARD Sad

Long story:

Was not feeling fully myself today (got over a high fever from last week, lost about 2-3 pounds), but that's not an excuse, I was over it. 1 hour of doing techniques and drilling. I roll first roll with a 3 stripe white belt (I drilled with him for the whole hour), and he went with lots of force. I managed to get him to tap out of exhaustion, although I was feeling a bit tired.

Well, he goes back to rest, and I call up the zero stripe white belt for 2 reasons (one, and most importantly, I was a bit tired, and wanted someone easy. two, because I had never rolled with him before).

Well, I pull guard, and he puts zero resistance. I ask him "is this your first time rolling?", just to see how hard I should go on him. He says he had a been here about 2 months, morning classes.

Well, he's in my guard, and he gets one arm around the back of my head, technically like you set up an ezekiel from the mount. I was looking for this, and I told myself not to let him get any stupid choke.

Well, I don't know what the hell happened, but he got the other hand in.

Now, I was determined not to tap for 2 reasons.

1. He's a white belt, it's his first time rolling with me. But that's not main reason.

2. He's in my fricking guard, I refuse to tap to something that's not a technical submission, I don't wanna ever tap from someone in my guard... it's embarrassing for me o_0.

Anyway, I fight the choke off for about 30 seconds (the dude really has it tight), and I can't armbar him before he is smothering me, and not extending his hands, and using his head to push down on his forearm, making it very tight. I was ABOUT to faint, and I managed to make a bit of space, just to squeek some air in. You could hear me weazing, but I was getting air. This went on about 15 seconds, and he got it on me another time.

Well, I fought for a sec or two, and everything went black. I tapped barely, and he left go after a second or so.

So yea, I'm feeling HORRIBLE. I can't believe someone tapped me from inside my guard. Blah, I want revenge lol.

But yea, I know i'm making a big deal out of nothing, but this really feels bad o_0.

K, let the jokes/flames/etc. about ego etc. begin o_0

Next time something like that happens put your feet on his hips and use your legs. Or just extend your body. Sometimes big strong guys try this kinda thing.

I tried. I tried pushing off with my hips, nothing.

I EVEN got a knee between us, which theoretically should be able to break the grip easy, but no budging him. I was about to go totally out.

You gotta use really good hip movement/rotation and slap on the arm bar fast and blast up with your hips. You only have seconds to hit it.

When I realized what was going on, it was way too late. Once he had it locked in, there was no way I could move an inch. He was putting 110% into the finish. Only so much I can take until I go out.

mat. The one thing you never want to do is underestimate a move from anywhere. I got americanaed from inside my own guard too. guy just powered through it. it happens.

The counter to ezekial is not to fight his grips or whatnot but to slip your arm through. Raise your hand like your asking a question in class. All the way through his sleeves. Obviously you have to catch it before its to late but once you have your arm up they cant do anything to you and they can squeeze all day and maybe, MAYBE piss you off with a little neck crankage.

but yea just raise your hand. thumbsup

Also you shouldn't let a guys arm over your shoulder anyway EVER when your squared up to him. There are the straight armlocks but they have you hip out. So remember that. If your square to his hips dont let his arm come behind your head for risk of a can opener or anything of the sort.

O and one last thing, If you never thought that you were gonna say you had a bad day or you sucked than you need to start rethinking your way through jiu jitsu. Cause with every good day you have your going to have bad days too.

Relax, it is just training. Your ego is talking. ;) You got tapped by a white belt, so what. Congratulate the guy and smile + learn from it.

Good reading: ;)

Yea, I said congrats, smiled, and hope I don't fall for it again Razz

I really hope I don't have a bad day for every good day o_0. I've had maybe 3 days that I would consider bad, and the rest were just great fun. I just get mad at myself for falling for something that I SHOULD NOT fall for. If it was to a black belt, I'd laugh, because he owned me from my own guard. But from a zero stripe white belt, I don't know, I just feel like I did a stupid thing, and I don't like doing stupid things.

Thanks. Very well said. I feel so comfortable with people in my guard, sometimes when rolling with white belts that are new, I let them do whatever they want, and just weather the storm a bit, and let them get a feel for it, and show them that their only real option from my guard is to try and pass it. So yea, I feel horrible when I got submitted from it, something that should never happen. It's like tapping from a knee on belly, i'll never do it.

Now you know what all the rest of the class felt like when you started and were tapping them - congratulations - what comes around goes around!

Really however you probabily learned more from this defeat then you would have learned if you had not been tapped - so congratulations on increasing your knowledge!

Does not feel nice when it comes back at you...

But yea, I learned two things.

1) Don't let, even a white belt, put hands around your head. It's true, it can give me trouble, can openers, etc.

2) NEver underestimate a zero stripe white belt o_0

Your letting your pride effect you too much. It's the reason sherdog folks stalk you. Your not bigger than jiu jitsu and your not above being tapped. Our instructor just said something to us last night that makes sense here. This is not exact but its close. The reason I can take your back is because my back has been taking a million times. The reason I can choke you out is because I have been choked out a million times.

Just remember, you will learn in failure than you ever will in success. How you recover from your failures will determine your character and what you have deep inside of you.

Yeah man don't worry about it. This stuff happens. For instance last week I was going against a white belt(I'm a blue) and I tapped him 6 or 8 times and was ready to go then I said let's go one more time. Next thing I know I'm getting woke up. He got my back and collar choked me from the back. It must have been crazy quick because I really didn't feel the choke.

Never underestimate anything from any position! I was rolling with a dude, not really technical, not too good at passing guard. I was kinda just riding it out with him in my guard, like you were. Well the dude's bjj wasn't too hot, but he had trained Aikido for a few years prior, so he gets a hold of one of my hands and proceeds to wristlock the S*** outta me. I was so lackadaisical in recognizing the threat and defending it that he almost broke my wrist before I had a chance to tap! Lesson learned Shocked

thats a little different. wristlocks always catch me offguard because i dont expect anything that small. I had a kid who did aikido who came to my judo club and it was kinda funny. #1 he was wearing his aikido gi. When I started warming up before class before the class warmup he was doing kicks and several forms he knew. It was kinda funny. I was nice about the whole thing and politely kicked his ass to show him what was fo rizzles. It was good times.

Sounds to me like you should have opened your guard. Using a closed guard a lot can cause people to smother you and even tap you in your guard. I understand that you were tired and probably used closed guard to have a little break without actually breaking, but that can also be a huge problem. I find that using an open guard( whether spider, butterfly ) helps me keep my distance when needed against someone that is being more aggressive than me or if I'm just plain tired.

Also, everyone gets caught some time or another. The main thing is positivity and sportsmanship. I've had guys tap me that totally shouldn't have, and then when I tap they get up and yell YES!!! and walk away like they just won the Worlds or something. As long as the guy you were rolling with was cool, than be cool!

Good Luck!

That's happened to me before. You know the thing about not attacking someone while in their guard? Well you met the one exception. Judo guys do that stuff all the time. Once they have a good grip on the ezekiel you can push away, open your guard, do anything, and still be screwed. Ezekiel is tightened by pushing away. Stay close and sweep the mofo, then stay close and cross face the hell out of them.

HAha, that's not me dude. I'm all open guard. I just use closed guard to start the fight, and open up always. I was just resting, was not expecting to get tapped o_0

Every time you get tapped is an opportunity to get better.

It's going to happen...forget about what color their belt was.

I got my blue belt and got triangled by a 300 pound plus no-stripe white belt. Never happened again since then because I learned from it.
