#1 |
As many of you know, because of my schedule at work I only get to go to class every other Friday Fridays are open mat. I have been watching videos and I picked up Theory and Technique for "instruction". Do you guys think I should just drill the majority of the time I'm on the mat? I know rolling is good, but if I don't have any ammo I'm just basically doing nothing but trying not to get tapped.
It's a two hour session so I was thinking 1 1/2 hours of drilling and roll the last thirty minutes. |

You will not progress at this rate dude.
Don't mean to be harsh, but it's true. What you need is a grappling partner to train with at other times. Or even get a grappling dummy, and work techniques on it while at home, and apply fridays.
But training once every 14 days is not enough. |

| I don't know how I will get no progression, very little, yes. If what you're saying is true, then why go at all? It's not like the only time I think about the moves is when I go to open mat. I may not have a partner or dummy, but I do practice the motions the best I can at home. I also do a bunch of visualization. But what do I know? If you guys think I should just say, "screw it" and wait till I can go full time let me know. |

No no no haha, don't screw it. Although I'm just saying, you will progress slowly, very slowly. You need to put more time getting muscle memory into the moves. That's why you need a grappling dummy, or someone to grapple with.
Visualization works wonders when you're going 2-3 times a week, but when you don't do the moves, it's hard. |

So much of jiu-jitsu when you are starting out is muscle memory. So much repetition and familiarity produces automatic responses.
What mat was trying to say is that training your ass off for 3 hours and then nothing for 13 days...your body will forget most of what you did.
My advice would be if you only have open mat every other week and not other training - find an experienced partner who will drill with you every Friday and drill the living hell out of the fundamentals until you are so sick of them you want to puke. Once you hit that level...keep drilling them until you want to puke again.
Your BEST BET is to find someone who you can roll with on a weekly basis to keep that muscle memory and absorption going...it's SO important.
That's my 2 cents... _________________ First to Fight Combat Sportswear

EXACTLY.
Seriously, make your own grappling dummy. If you practice on it 20 minutes every day, you will literally progress 10x faster. You put your Gi on it, and just practice everything you want to practice, armbars, guardwork, sweeps, u name it.
But a life training partner is always best. |

Drill, drill and drill again. Make every effort to find a weekly parter...or get yourself a dummy and make sure you drill proper form..else you will be spending time "un-learning" bad habits.
But as mat said...a live body is always the best. _________________ First to Fight Combat Sportswear

| even if you can't find someone else interested in jiu jitsu, if you can get someone to let you practice a few things on them once or twice a week, it should help |
