Which safety gear do you think is number 1 for bjj?
Mouth guard, cup, head gear,...etc...
Also, did anyone get a mouth guard from their dentist? How much was it and was it worth it? My dentist quoted me 300$....just wondering how much it costed for you guys. |

Forget a dentist one, just buy one at your local sports retailer and mold it to your teeth its good enough.
And I think a cup is probably the most useful protection during a fight but mouthguard is also pretty important because i've cut my tongue up a few times without one. |

I do not roll with any of the safety gear.
Cups are NOT allowed in BJJ tournaments. Mouth pieces are a good idea, a $5 one from a sports store is fine. There is not striking here. However my friend did chip hos tooth once.
Ear guards are a must for some but most guys do not use. _________________ Purple Belt

Some do allow them, some don't. Some tournaments even require them.
I wouldn't compete without one. I can't believe that people would recognize anyone as having any right to tell them not to. |

I wear a cup, but at times I think it works against me almost as much as it works for me. I find it interferes with some leg-pressure (fininshing arm bars, etc). I might try out one of the semi-flex ones like the spider-guard.
As for mouthpieces, I have tried every sporting goods store variety from $1 to $30, and have never been happy with them, either the fit wasn't good, or I couldn't breathe right, it was painful, etc....(i did do most of this looking during striking arts training).
I wound up getting a custom fit one fromthe fight dentist, and though expensive, I couldn't be happier with it! Fits great, can talk and breathe, and feel it gives excellent protection. _________________ Mitsuyo "Count Koma" Maeda - Carlos Gracie, Sr. -Carlson Gracie - Gabriel "Gladiator" Santos - Me |

I wear both a cup and a mouth guard when I roll. Adoption and fake teeth are both hella expensive.
I've had 2 mouth guards, both boil & bites; a cheap Shock Doctor and a slightly more expensive Las Vegas Chompers. The LV Chomper is much thicker all around. http://www.lvccustommouthguards.com/#!boil-and-bite-mouthguards |

| Any recommendations for a mouth guard for bjj. I want something where I can talk with the mouth guard still in my mouth. |

if you're going to get a mouthguard to protect your teeth, then get one that is going to do the job right. get one that will protect both your upper and lower teeth. boil and bite is fine. i got a shock doctor on sale for about $12 and it's been worth it.
it's hard to talk with it, but after some practice you can make yourself understood.
you can't tell from the pictures on the site below, but it has an opening in the front to make breathing easier. i have no problem breathing.

I got one from the dentist. It covers the upper teeth only. Its easy to talk with.
I've used the boil and bite ones that cover the upper and lower teeth before too. I prefer the one I got from the dentist as it is super comfortable and easy to breathe and talk through.
If you look around you might be able to pick one up on sale.
As for head gear, I only use it if I have 'tweeked' an ear to prevent it from getting worse.
With regards to a cup, most of the time I dont wear one, although I do have a shock doctor compression short cup combo. |

I use the Shock Doctor (about $26). This is the 4th one I've bought.
I have lost the other ones. We are lucky that one of the guys who trains
with us has a wife who is a dentist. She gives us a good discount
($75).
No cup, no ear guards for me. _________________ gracieacademy.com |

| I use an Opro custom guard, cost me £30 (around $55), they send you a kit, you take a mould, send it back and within 10 days you get a custom mouthguard. Awesome! |

| Mouth Piece is the most important IMO. I kept getting my lip split and my teeth were starting to chip. I got the mouth piece and that has stopped. Just google custom mouth guard there are plenty of site that do custom jobs. |

I got a mouth guard from Gladiator - Pro Model (http://www.customguards.com) , $50 (+shipping for molds) with custom molds that they send back to you in case you need another that they sell to you for half price. I even screwed up my first set of molds (why yes, I am an idiot) and they sent me replacements at no charge.
First mouth guard that doesn't really bother me. Stays put, I have to dig it out of my mouth to remove. Can talk with it in but not perfectly. |

The 5 dollar basic mouth guard is IMHO enough for grappling. If you do striking arts the custom made ones are good. _________________ -------------------------------------------------------------------------

I use mouthguard, cup and kneepads
In my opinion a dentist mouthguard is not necessary for grappling matters
In MMA why not
Cup is very useful to train some techniques. Especially when my partner is a beginner im often glad about wearing a cup |

I dont wear a cup because they are not allowed in any IBJJF tournament... which is primarily all I compete in. I also have never been one to wear a mouth guard.
I remember back when I first started I asked my coach if I should wear a mouth guard and he said it was up to me... but for him... he just keeps his mouth closed...
Ever since then I dont wear a mouth guard with the sole exception of the rare occurence where I train no gi. NO gi is much faster paced and you cant control the quick jerk movements as well. That is the only place where I have gotten any sort of mouth/lip injury.
With the gi though... no problems at all _________________ "The rest of you can go to HELL! ... I am going to train jiu-jitsu in TEXAS!"
