Okay, I'm new to bjj, 15, female. I was there last sunday and this blue belt just showed me a few basic things. [of which i mildly sprained my wrist and have a huge purple bruise on my back] But I'm officially starting this friday.

I've taken taekwondo for a short amount of time and they were superr strict with the uniform. At least where I took lessons before I quit, you could only wear a certain style of white tshirt underneath, and they said you weren't even allowed to wash the uniform because it "washes away the hard work".
but i know in jiu jitsu is less strict with that.

So are there any rules as to what girls are generally allowed to wear under a gi?
Is a black tank top like okay, or what? I know this one girl there told me she wears shorts underneath the pants..
thanks~

Yea, shorts or spandex under the pants and look into female rash guards to wear under the gi top. Women are allowed to wear them under their gis in competition. I would look into those. You can pick some good ones up at places like BudoVideos online if you want a true grappling rash guard or a cheap under armor at like Academy would do the trick. Grappling rash guards are better though cuz they will be tightly stitched at the sleeve cuffs, neck and bottom so they will not ride up.

Enjoy!

You wouldn't wash the uniform? That's nuts.

With bjj you really have got to wash the uniform every time...and the belt. You don't want to get or spread ringworm or other nasty creepers. Those will eat away at your hard work...

A tank top is not ideal under your gi because hands will be reaching inside your collar, and could potentially get caught in the strap of the tank. They also don't provide much protection for your shoulders when you're shrimping. Your gi will be made of semi-rough material, and when you're sliding down the mats on your shoulders, it can get a little uncomfortable if you're only wearing a tank top under there. As Mark mentioned, you will want to look into getting a few rash guards. You can spend as much or as little on these as you want. You can pick them up at Wal-mart or Target for $10 or $15, and they'll be perfectly fine. You'll want to avoid t-shirts under your gi, because they will get sweaty and saggy and then fingers and toes can get caught in them. Some people will grapple in t-shirts, but I hate it. I feel like I'm trying to grapple in a beach towel.

Your gi pants WILL slide down. They WILL come untied. So, unless you want to show off the goods, please get some spandex shorts to wear under your gi pants. You can also pick these up cheap at Target or Wal-mart. You can spend a bunch of money on a grappling name brand, but it's really not necessary. In my experience, there is no difference in the functionality of the shorts/leggings. The only exception would be my VJJBJJ rash guard. That is the only rash guard I've ever seen that doesn't ride up, and I've owned a lot of them.

Other girl-friendly things to note - please remove any make-up before class. It will rub off onto gis, and sometimes stains. This will not make you any friends. Trim your nails (fingers and toes). Don't use bobby pins in your hair (or other sharp/metal items). And, remember, the men that you train with are going to be nice to you because you're new and because you're female. Please don't attack them like they're an 80% off sale at Macy's and expect them not to respond in kind. Smile Welcome to BJJ!

The advice in bold is really appreciated by the rest of us.

I spent like 15 minutes scrub-scrub-scrubbing foundation out of my Gi the last time some new women came in for classes.

I'm a big fan of compression shorts, but as a guy, I'm trying to keep everything close to the body to reduce the chances of it getting hit.

My usual pitch - I got a Pirahna gear long sleave rashie for Christmas...this thing is awesome and cheap ($35)

Men almost never think to tell women not to wear make-up until it's too late. Since I have been paired up with new women so many times, I just keep face wipes in my bag and do the "Welcome to BJJ - here's a wipe to remove your make-up before we train" now. Much better than people grumbling about you behind your back, imo.

Bike shorts under the gi pants work great, IMHO. And a compression sports bra, one that doesn't have a clasp to grind right into your spine.

I personally ( I'm a dude) wear under armor 9inch underwear. It's made of lightweight rash guard type material and extends almost to my knees. This to me is the best way to go. You don't get a wedgie either. Other than that a good rash guard has been my new fave thing to wear.

+1 on everything here. Only I don't wear shorts underneath my gi pants. I double knot my pant cords so I've never had a problem with my pants sliding down or underwear peaking out at the top *knocks on wood.*

I don't trust double knots, either. Smile I take no chances!

Seriously, that would probably work great with the round drawstrings, but the flat ones in older pants would get so sweaty that you'd never get them untied. I know I've been stuck in some gi pants before when I really wanted to take them off after class.

Not unless you are a certain female black belt of my acquaintance who can casually hold people down and retie her gi pants at the same time. Rolling Eyes

I know one that fixes her hair whilst holding down certain blue belt women. Black belts are made of magic.

I have heard of not washing your belt. Not washing your GI is crazy!

This real jiu jitsu woman won't be rolling with your 'real' jiu jitsu guys, if that's the case.
