I think they did pretty good on the Muay Thai segment of the show, showed lots of the old world style and gave good history on different sects of Thai fighting and styles. I also liked how they went into the camp out in the jungle and saw the demonstrations they provided them with.

I didn't like the show at all. A real fighter would look at stuff and see that it's obviously BS. They didn't seem to my any attempt to separate the BS from the effective techniques. Also, I really would rather see them pit MT against the MMA fighter or wrestler. If they just have an elite level guy in each discipline compete with the rules they know so well against a guy that's trained for a week we'll watch the newbs lose every time.

Even a TKD guy will win if the goal isn't to do damage and there is no ground game.

You are right some of the moves were not something you could actually use in the ring, but they elaborated on which moves would not work in the ring and why. I am currently training in Muay Thai and BJJ so I did see lots of things in the show that would be beneficial to me and my training. They had some clips of actual fights in the show ...the one kid that got knocked out with an elbow to the temple area ...... Brutal ! punch

The show mentioned the mauy thai fighters start at a very early age, 8 or so and retire around age 25 (due to all the abuse) Shocked
Thats a rough life.

Yeah, well Muay Thai fighters fight every other week, so no wonder. Compare that to MMA artists, who fight three times a year.

I've NEVER been kneed hard. Is it much different from a punch to the midsection. I take punches there very well.

I have never been kneed hard like I have been getting with MT, I have belts in TaiKwonDo and KickBoxing but nothing prepared me for the knee strikes. You think oh you can do every kick in the book...knee strikes are nothing.... Yeah well when I got my first solid knee to my chest I could not get up for like 15mins and the bruise stayed for almost two weeks.

Oh...what it feels like.... picture the tip of a wide baseball bat hitting you with the same force as a kick . I think the worst for me right now is the ribs, the stomach I have been trying to tense my abs on the strikes as much as possible when we spar to help with that but I am still a woman so it HURTS.

The point is to see how muay thai is for standup fighting. Its not to see if its the best overall complete fighting style. We obviously know that no single style is the best for fighting. In MMA you need to master several different styles to be a complete fighter. Sure Royce Gracie was able to win early UFC matches with just BJJ, but today that wouldn't fly.

The best thing about Muay Thai is its a no BS fighting style. There are no stupid ass katas(who invented these Rickson Gracie awful things??). Its not a no contact point system for fighting. There are no fancy kicks, that look good but never land. Its techniques you can really use in a fight. The kicks are kicks that are the most powerful and high percentage. It even focuses on the clinch game, where many fights end up. In class, at the intermediate level and up, a lot of contact sparing takes place. Its one of, if not the best standup style you can learn for real world fighting.

We were learning knee strikes from the clinch and I took a moderate strike to my thigh - deep sore bruise for almost 2 weeks.

Can't imagine how devastating a real knee strike would be.

good idea Finally someone agrees on the STUPID katas.....I hate them Mad especially in TaiKwonDo they make no sense sometimes because how in the hell will they benefit in a real situation or street fight ...so stupid crazy

That Rich Franklin fight was crazy... his whole nose was rearranged to the perfect imprint of Silva's knee..... Ouch !

Knees must hurt. Hey, question here. Who here tightens their stomach subconciously moment any strike hits you. Like in school, someone does a fun punch at my stomach, moment the first milimeter hits in, my stomach by itself tightens up 100%. Just natural reaction for my body. don't even need to see the punch coming, unless it's an extremly fast penetrating punch.

I had to mentally train myself to do that, I guess because I am a woman we are not the best with the mid section tuffness so we have to literally train our bodies to adapt ,its not the same as a man to me.
