Well considering the fact that my instructor, Jeff Messina, is a world class competitor, black belt, and has finished in top spots, receiving medals in first second and third place of many major bjj comps, and that our team, Team Revolution, and our school in particular, fairs very well, and usualy beats Gracie Barra in most tournaments in Houston... I'm going to say that any comment aimed at saying my school is doing something wrong is just not a comment I will give any credit.

Deep breath, VG. Deep breath. He's just stating a fact. At most gyms that I've ever attended, a woman on her 2nd night would still be guided toward more experienced training partners. This is NOT a slam on your club. It certainly doesn't happen at all gyms - just most of them. This woman picking you could have been a coincidence. It might not even be the norm for your gym. No need to get all sensitive.

I should have added, in my original post, that Jeff (our head instructor and the owner of the shcool) was not there, and class was being run by one of his top students. So...had Jeff been there, he probably would have guided her (the girl who asked me to roll) towards specific partners who could have better benifited her.

You are likely correct. Sometimes top students don't think about things in the same way that the owner/instructor does (because the owner/instructor also has to think about things like liability insurance).

When I first started BJJ, I was not guided toward (or away from) any partners, and I could roll starting with my first class. I'm no worse for it now, although it was a pretty bruise-y beginning for me. When I first started, though, it would have been very intimidating to ask a colored belt to roll, so I would only ask other white belts. Plus, I had read online that asking an upper belt to roll could be disrespectful, so I didn't want to make any etiquette errors until I knew the other students better.

it's common in many schools (regardless of their tournament prowess) to not allow newbies to roll at all until they've had enough classes to at least learn basic positions, etiquette, etc.
_________________
Blue Belt

And more importantly, if you're looking to translate that training to the cage, you gotta have an instructor that can explain and demonstrate. BJJ that is used in the cage is WAY different than sport BJJ, if you can't find somebody to explain those differences to you (if that's what you're interested in) then somebody might demonstrate it for you the hard way.
_________________
"To teach those who don't know, To remind those who do know, To correct those who think they know."

You know, there wasn't a whole lot of ground stuff; but man, Nelson made that back escape look so easy... I thought for sure as soon as Verdum took his back that it was over. The leg kick right before then that knocked him down was pretty sick as well.
_________________
"To teach those who don't know, To remind those who do know, To correct those who think they know."

MMA is whatever you want it to be, as long as there are multiple MA's being "mixed" in the training.

But yeah, all fans know that it usualy refers to BJJ, Muay Thai (or boxing, kickboxing), and wrestling combined.

But, there are some top level guys who use other forms as well.

Look at Machida. He's a karate guy (among other things, true, but you can't ignore his karate). Even GSP got started with karate, and while he may not use it much, it is still there.

For me, when I say I train MMA, currently it consists soley of Bjj (gi and no gi), wrestling, and Muay Thai, and while I mostly train them individualy, I do also train them together.
I'll do my best Diaz impression:

"Dude, he didn't lean against the cage and let me hit him, so I quit, MMA is stupid."
_________________
"To teach those who don't know, To remind those who do know, To correct those who think they know."

I'm going to say that any comment aimed at saying my school is doing something wrong is just not a comment I will give any credit.
I have always been told that you should walk away from every roll having learned something and feeling like the person you rolled with learned something, or else it wasn't a successful roll. Each time you train with somebody you should be intent on making yourself a little bit better, and hopefully helping the other person become a little bit better as well. You can look at that situation as an opportunity for both people, not just yourself; she gets a chance to roll with a much larger opponent and hopefully gets a chance to learn something about how to handle bigger guys in the future. If anything she'll get a chance to feel it and if she doesn't learn anything from you, she will hopefully be able to identify something specific that she has a question about and can take it to one of the instructors for advice.
_________________
"To teach those who don't know, To remind those who do know, To correct those who think they know."

Anytime I get any kind of open wound in class, including minor skin abrasions, I rub alcohol gel all over it really good the moment im done rolling and getting ready to head home.

I also never wear socks or shoes after training. Flip flops only, to allow my feet to get nice and dry real fast.

Then when I get home, I shower immediately and scrub down extra hard.

I think that's a big difference as well, do the instructors that teach "MMA" actually train people with that influence in mind? Or do they just train their particular martial art and call it MMA, because they're training more than one type of martial art. There's a lady that is a front desk receptionist at a office that is really into MMA and told me she used to teach it, when I asked what she studied/taught, she cranked off a bunch of names of ancient martial arts (not even prominent ones, I can't remember what she said). I guess I could have argued semantics about what the definition of MMA actually is, but there's no benefit to that.

That being said, Stephen Thompson's head kick knockout of Stittgen was pretty f***ing cool, it's cool to see some high level Karate/Kickboxing in the cage.
_________________
"To teach those who don't know, To remind those who do know, To correct those who think they know."

I do feel lucky to be training under a black belt, compared with many other schools we are still relatively young but we have a ton of solid purples and are starting to get some browns so things are looking really good for the future. I remember when I first started five years ago it was virtually impossible to find a legit school I had a choice between a blue belt instructor 15 miles away or a purple belt instructor 12 miles away.
_________________
www.rwmma.com
I think mmacandy does something very similar to that, stuff like this:

Link

Like I posted in the video comments, only a entry level white belt is going to be dumb enough to extend their arms that far away from their body to defend the mount, and there's a million other attacks that are higher percentage than forcing an arm triangle from mount. But technique isn't what they're promoting, obviously...
_________________
"To teach those who don't know, To remind those who do know, To correct those who think they know."

NOt to sound like a pervert, because I'm not. But just speaking objectively here, a lot of 14 year olds today honestly look a lot older. We don't know the whole story. He may have assumed she was older, and she may have said she was older. It is still irresponsible on him, and he should have verified. But that would not constitute grounds for hating him and wishing he dies in prison, IMO.

Then again, he may have known she was under 14 years old, and may have taken the risk anyway, like a dumbass pervert.

We have no way of knowing. Best to not cast judgement, in my opinion.

Good post. It's funny watching those early UFC/RoyceFC matches, because even the reff didn't know what he was looking for/at. Royce's opponents in just about every match would be tapping for a few seconds before the reff or the commentators knew what was happenning. It was so new. lol

I used to read and watch these types of people's stuff all the time. What I found is that it's usually someone you've never heard of spouting the same stuff. Usually goes something like this.

1. BJJ does only ground
2. BJJ are stupid because they don't know they have eyes and balls to strike
3. BJJ just blindly tackles people
4. BJJ has no idea that I can knee them in the face/ elbow them in the back of the neck...can't tackle me.
5. IF BJJ get's me to the ground I will just hit them in the nuts/eyes and get back up.
6. BJJ doesn't have an answer for multiple attackers.

It used to annoy me. Then I came to a great conclusion.

BJJ is so threatening that these guys write entire essays, make videos of why they think it's so useless. Eg: BJJ the only art that is a threat to them. I've never seen them writing in depth articles of how they would beat karate, tae kwon do, of Krav Maga.

I also take solace in the fact that most of the great masters, instead of attacking BJJ, embrace it. Chuck Norris= BJJ Black Belt, Dan Inosanto=BJJ Black belt. Others took to Judo instead, but still the parent of Jiu-Jitsu none the less.

I find arguing with these types of people, unless in a setting where we can actually trade techniques, is just a waste of energy. Therefore, poor jiu-jitsu.

Just depends man. Just look at budovideos and see what you can find. I would say the lightest gi I have seen guys get away with at the IBJJF tournaments is aroung 2.7-3 lbs. I have seen a few guys wear the OTM light weight gi as well as teh vulkan ultra light. I would look into those if you are really that worried about it.

My best suggestion would be just to drop weight accoridingly and make sure you are in the propper weight class. You weigh in right before your first match so makeing sure you are healthy and good to go the day of the tournament is key. I always give about 4-4.5 lbs for my gi and belt. So normally I compete at middle weight which is 181 with the gi so I try to be around 176 the week of the tournament If not lower. I will really try to be lower for the big tournaments in Cali just because I know I will go out a few days earlier and I want to be able to eat whatever the hell I want. It is a great advantage to you when you are out eating steak and the guys at the table next to you are eatting like a small piece of bread.... So just drop weight the proper way and accoridingly to where you want to compete. Never try to drop the week of the tournament unless its in your plan.

For example, right now I am waking up around 195-196.... my bracket at the Houston Open is 194.5 on Sunday... So I still have about 5 lbs to drop but I plan on doing it in the next 2-3 days just by dieting and training. I will still have about 3 days of being on weight. So just plan it out and youll be fine.

Good rule of thumb though is 4 lbs for your gi and belt is what you should allow for any of the popular competition gis.
_________________
Read My Jiu-Jitsu Story & More @:

My first class was closed armbar setups as well! Professor Easton has a knack for turning every submission into a repetitive drill (I'm trying to say that in a positive way), so we would drill each portion of the setup 10 times in a rapid succession before moving to the next part. I was in such horrible shape that by the time we had drilled the portion of the submission where you drive your leg opposite the arm that you have trapped into their armpit and across their back, my legs were burning! I literally limped out of class that day and couldn't even sleep that night because I was in so much pain.

Beyond that, I was so nervous every time I would train because I was scared, scared of contact, getting hurt, not being able to relax, etc etc. I've said this many times but I'll say it again, my coaches told me later that for the first 5-6 months, they didn't think I had a chance in hell of being successful. Just keep coming to class!
_________________
"To teach those who don't know, To remind those who do know, To correct those who think they know."

BJJMark95 wrote:

I think you will find most lower level guys will end up liking side mount more so than mount because they are not comfortable in mount. It takes some getting used to but mount is actually a very very dominant position. It takes time to get comfortable enough with it to be able to use it effectively. But from experiences, if someone of a high level gets mount on me it sucks. Lower level guys just dont like the mount because generally they get rolled to easy and have a hard time attacking from there.

Personally, I will generally pass into side mount and not mount for one single reason.... I am looking for what is IMO the BEST position in jiu-jitsu... the back. I think it easier and I have way more set ups to get to your back from side mount than I do from mount and therefore I will set up taking the back from side mount. The back mount is the worst position to be in in jiu-jitsu. You are going to have to struggle to get out and even if you do manage to get out then you will in all likely wind up in a bad position as well.

My philosophy, especially when I am training to compete, is that if and when I get your back, the fight is over. There is no reason unless I royally screw up that I should not finish you from the back. That is how I have learned and that is how I train my mind.

So to answer the question, mount is a very good position and is second only to the back.

This!
This is a good article, sometimes I forget how lucky I am to be part of an academy that has multiple black belts, when you're around it for a while it's easy to assume that that's how it is everywhere and take it for granted.
_________________
"To teach those who don't know, To remind those who do know, To correct those who think they know."

i've been caught off guard in class by old and young guys that shot out of nowhere, or hit a nice double leg.
it happens. stuffing the takedown isn't as easy as a lot of guys would like to think.
to say nothing of a high level wrestler or experience grappler.

i've known some fighters who never wrestled before, and picked it up pretty naturally and have pretty competent wrestling in terms of how they apply it in fighting.
The problem I have with mount is that I'm still fairly new, so I haven't drilled too many finishes from that position, so basically I get there but have no idea what to do with it after I establish it. I usually end up attacking an arm or lapel and get swept back into guard, which is where I'm more comfortable right now anyway.
_________________
"To teach those who don't know, To remind those who do know, To correct those who think they know."

def legal but i think it can stunt your growth a bit if you focus on that too much early instead of transitions to other positions.

i know one guy at my school that hte lapel wrap is all he knows and does. Yes its effective at times but it also locks you into that position aswell, limiting your options.

i say use it but dont overuse it til you are better are basic transitions from side control too.
_________________
BJJ from GJJ,

_________________
Read My Jiu-Jitsu Story & More @:

In Jiu-Jitsu, there's never a wrong thing to wear. I think your experiment is a great Idea and demonstrates to students alot about how to apply jiu-jitsu in unique situations.

Like growler said, you may want to put a few restrictions to avoid people getting hurt.
I think it sounds interesting, but it might open up the opportunity for some risk if people are wearing something foolish. Certain materials could actually cut in a certain circumstance, thin but hard collars...stuff with zippers or metal buttons.
Just go to budovideos, then search for a jiu jitsu kimono - makes no difference on which one, then click on the gi for details, then click the link for washing instructions... it's the same story for all of them... I'm just too lazy to type it out.
_________________
Answer 1: Just go to class

I am still pretty new. I was rolling with a guy newer than me. I had side control and went for a Gi choke. We have learned using our own gi could be can be helpful because you opponent won't be as likely to see it coming.

I didn't really know exactly how to apply the choke, I was more or less kind of feeling for it as I went.

I failed to get the choke is position. What did happen was I somehow was able to restrain both his arms, roll him and take his back which led to a RNC.

Soon as I had his arms he said "you can't do that"

I said If I can use my gi to choke you, why can't I restrain your arms with it.

So was it Illegal or cheesy to use my own Gi?
_________________
"I come in peace. I didn't bring artillery.

Stephan Kesting made a valid point on one of his DVDs : With Knee on Belly, in a self-defence situation, not only do you get the most leverage to punch the guy under you, but you also can run away fast, if you have to. Not so with the back or mount.

Jack's answer makes sense in this mindset: it depends on who you're fighting, but also under which rules...

Lastly, whatever dominant position you may have, I think what matters is holding on to that position until you can finish. No use getting back mount if you can't hold it, in a competitive situation.

Me, I like the back since chokes are easy to sink from either side, and in a self-defense situation, the guy can't strike from that position at all, grab my genitals, poke my eyes, without getting choked the f*** out first. However, I can stike the back of his neck/head as long as I want.
_________________
My training blog

I'm not real fond of mount - it can be hard to hold mount and get swept or put into 1/2 guard.

It's not that I never get mound but to be honest my preferred position currently is side control. As I get better my preference may change.

As others have said Mount and Back Control are worth the most points - they ARE worth the most points for a reason so work towards one of those until you develop your own game.
_________________
Great Grappling Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Posted: Sun Feb 05, 2012 4:32 pm (GMT -7)

I linked to this thread in a Facebook message to my instructor and he sent back a private message - wish I could share it but I can not - it was encouraging however and he gave me some more advice along the same lines as the previous night.

After his note I felt much better and I took his advice from the night prior to my post and started to apply it to my game - Friday night's rolling was much better and the results were better.

Basically the night prior to this post he told me that I needed to open up my game and quit rolling to survive with people who are equal or better than me. He told me to grapple with people who are better than me like I do with people whom I am better than.

He said paraphrasing - wish I had recorded it exactly - I may get submitted more but that by grappling and trying to assert myself instead of trying to survive my game would open up and improve more.

Note - I think learning to survive IS VERY IMPORTANT - and I survive quite well with people who are much better than me - but FOR ME it's time to quit being in survival mode and transition to a more aggressive/assertive attitude and style.

I do not want people - especially white belts to misunderstand - this does not mean that I'm going to apply more strength or athleticism - it means that instead of waiting to defend or going from a bad spot to an easily defensible spot and stopping there that I should work toward dominance.

It's a mindset - I need to quit defending and start attacking.

Very similar to what buhriyon said 2 posts above.
_________________
Great Grappling Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

You did accomplish something. You started building your base. You have to understand that you don't know anything. Your not going to jump into rolling and submitting people. So you are likely gonna run one technique or one drill in that entire night. And you still don't have that drill you did perfectly. You have to do repetitions of it, over and over again to get it.

Also it was your first day dude. Lower your expectations, or you're going to likely be disappointed.

I dont have nearly as much experience as you but have recently vented similar frustrations on my blog. My problem is I have a good grasp on the start and finish of a technique but I screw up many of the details in between. Hip control, when to shrimp, arm/wrist control, etc. I need to slow my game down some. Focus on individual aspects of my training.

During my first month or so of training, after class I would be thinking about the positive aspects of the class. That trap and roll I pulled off or how I managed to transition to side control. But I never really gave much thought to what I did wrong when I tapped or how was my opponent able to pass my guard so easily. But I am starting to learn that it is better to slow it down a bit, it it means being technically sound.

Anywho, I hope you get past your frustrations. Dont give up. Maybe even consider buying a couple private lessons to see if your trainer can help you identify some of those issues. Maybe you are thinking about what you need to do next, instead of letting it be a programmed response.

I don't do many things well. But one of the few things I can do to almost anyone is utilize bridging to improve my position. It's mainly because I learned to bridge and transition without thinking about it. Its a natural response when I find myself in certain situations (especially side control).

Good luck
_________________
http://mycerebralgumbo.blogspot.com/
Is it possible that you are mistaking being technical for a lack of aggression. I find that at times when I am getting completely mauled I have a lack of tenacity. Not trying to be insulting or anything but I have similar feelings that you describe at times and this was the reason for me. Even though Jiu Jitsu is called the gentle art you still have to be aggressive and attack.
_________________
www.rwmma.com

In sport BJJ, back and mount are worth 4 points apiece. Both are considered equally dominant positions for sport BJJ.

For MMA, it used to be a lot easier to finish a fight from the back, but I think in the last few years, it's probably a little easier to finish from the mount in a lot of cases (when your opponent has good submission defense).

Like Jack said, look to takedown or sweep, pass the guard, and establish a more dominant position at first.
I personally prefer side control over mount I just feel that there are many more options. The back is another good position if your good at holding it because there are quite a few options with the gi and your opponent has only one option which is to escape, but I guess that could be said for all positions where you are on the bottom except for guard and a couple of submissions when you are in bottom in side control.
_________________
www.rwmma.com
Anything open or bleeding needs to be taken care of immediately. Wash it out with soap and water if the bleeding stops than you can keep rolling just make sure to shower right when you get home. I got staph once from a mat burn on my knee doing no gi I also got it once on my hand from a cut at work. You just have to be careful and take any precautionary measures you can think of because once it starts it can become an epidemic.
_________________
www.rwmma.com

Staph, ringworm, impetigo, MRSA, and many more. Educate yourself as to proper hygiene at the gym.

Start here:
http://www.richmondselfdefense.com/hygiene-in-bjj-important/

This is some very basic stuff, but it might be helpful to some who are really new to BJJ (one of my students who is a paramedic wrote it).
I think it really depends on your skill level and the skill level of your opponent.

While learning BJJ though, you should follow the classic position hierarchy.
Mount is at the top, your final position goal.

After you are advanced, you may find another position to be superior for you.
_________________
New to this site? Please review the rules

Ed_the_Judge wrote:

Plus at most bjj schools you can usually train mma outside of the normal classes if you wish. It's not always something that is advertised as a class, but it's been my experience that if you want to fight there will be guys who can train you.

I have never been a fan of mma classes, it's more something where you have to train all the arts individually and bring them together in your own style. That's how I would do it if I had endless time and money.

Agree 100%......The place I train offered classes in BJJ and TKD separately, during open mat time several of us always found time to do mma . Recently a current UFC fighter started teaches at our academy they offer Muay Thai and "submission wrestling".
Some major things i have noticed since we incorporated
Pro: The new classes have improved my cardio, I hated tkd but love MT (who knew) , Getting to learn NoGi from a non-BJJ aspect has help round out my game. I’m happy for the owners/instructors that the school is growing and for the opportunity it has created for new ppl to learn or get in shape.
Con: New ppl spaz and have poor mat etiquette ( I tell at least one person per class not to hit the mats with open cuts, burns ect...). Seems to me MMA only ppl are a tad disillusioned with the concept of "tapping out"....one cat screamed "NEVER" when someone applied and armbar ( part of me wishes that guy applying the hold wasn’t so nice and would have just broke it)
_________________
"The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong in the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry." - Ernest Hemingway
I'm a big fan of Trumpet Dan's BJJ Channel on YouTube and saw that he hadn't updated either his YouTube channel or his Grappling Basics website in quite some time. I was just wondering if anyone knew where he'd gone. I thought he made excellent instructional videos and would love to see more in the future. I hope nothing bad happened to him.
_________________
The jiu jitsu that I created was designed to give the weak ones a chance to face the heavy and strong. - Hélio Gracie
Buy the book mastery of hand strength by John Brookfield. Gives a great overview of grip training. Also visit ironmind.com for everything grip.
Yep.... thats how my school does it. We have a muay thai program with a highly qualified muay thai instructor, not an "mma" striking instructor. Then we have wrestling classes, and judo classes. The guys on our team who fight, take it all. Then combined it during mma sparring.
_________________
New to this site? Plus at most bjj schools you can usually train mma outside of the normal classes if you wish. It's not always something that is advertised as a class, but it's been my experience that if you want to fight there will be guys who can train you.

I have never been a fan of mma classes, it's more something where you have to train all the arts individually and bring them together in your own style. That's how I would do it if I had endless time and money.
I think you should choke out your boss. All kidding aside I feel for you,. it's hard these days in the business world everyone wants you to devote your life to some corporation that doesn't give a crap about you or your family but wants you to jump at everything that they tell you to do. Keep fighting the power, don't let the man keep you down.
_________________
www.rwmma.com
Don't be too impatient it's only your first day, but that sounds about right for a first day beginner class. Just take the time to absorb everything you learn and don't be in a rush because when you get to the advanced level you need those fundamentals to fall back on,. Also don't be afraid to ask questions.
_________________
www.rwmma.com

double r wrote:

What was the Manto thing? I missed it. Still intrigued by Nipplegate .

Manto placed an ad with two scantily-clad women 'grappling' in a Polish magazine. One woman was gripping the breast of another woman. It was distasteful, at best.

A lot of female grapplers flipped out and attacked Manto. Manto tried to explain that a) the ad wasn't in America, where we're all a little sheltered when it comes to seeing a semi-exposed boob; b) how the ad came to be (they weren't given final control over the ad or something); and c) the ad was aimed at their target demographic. They didn't really apologize for it. Women were loudly unhappy (and some men, to be fair). Most women that grapple now won't buy Manto products. Manto is unlikely to notice this boycott, seeing that women make up roughly less than 5% of the grappling population.

I didn't think the ad was that bad (knowing who those ads are targeting). Sure, it was a little low-class, and definitely not an ad I would have sanctioned if I were in their shoes. From where I sit, they made a business decision. It wasn't popular with a small, but vocal, set of grapplers. That's the risk that their advertising people took. In Poland, where the ad actually ran, I think the ratio of women to men that grapple is probably even lower than 1:20. I think it's that way across most of Europe.

Honestly, I have fewer problems with that Manto ad than I do with female grapplers posing in their gi top with nothing under it (or the equivalent). It was obvious that those women were models, and were posing for a shot. Seeing the BJJ women that are supposed to be looked at as the leaders of our sport, or leading the charge for women in this sport posing in shots like that, or auctioning ad space on their ass for a sponsor for a tournament (yes, this happened) is considerably more damaging to female grapplers, but that's a topic for another thread.

And, I fully expect this to spark the whole Manto debate all over again. I hope it doesn't. I know my opinion will not be a popular one with the other women that post here, though. (I assume that everyone knows that I'm also a woman, but I thought maybe I should clarify for the newer posters reading this.)

My first class was the warmup, followed by an 'intro lesson', where a man that outweighed me by about 80 lbs sat on me in mount and showed me a bunch of chokes from there. Everyone else drilled other things, and then we all sparred. I had observed BJJ classes prior to this, so I knew the bjectives (but couldn't execute).

After your first class (first several, really), you are going to feel clueless during sparring. You don't have anything to base what you learned today on, so it doesn't feel like you learned anything useful, but you did. The things to focus on right now are being in control of your limbs and your base/posture. Everything else will come.
