Hey guys. So most of you who know me know that I have taken a shift into strength training and powerlifting. Regretably I do this a bit more than BJJ now (SHAME! SHAME! SHAME!) but its because of goals. I have set some huge goals for myself this year for powerlfing that I really think I can achieve.

In the mean time – most people on here may not know – but my girl and I (who is also a powerlifter) have been doing so much research and planning over the coarse of the last year and we finally took the plunge. I signed our lease, and we are officially in the process of opening up a Powerlifting and Barbell-Based Strength training facility here in Houston!
There are very few places that cater to powerlifting here in Houston – and most if not all are private training places. Our’s is a different approach – we will have all the nicest, highest quality equipment to strength train – but maintain an open gym format similar to that of your big commercial gyms (that all suck and usually only have 1 squat rack that someone is ALWAYS curling on).
We decided to start it because after looking around – we hated the commercial gym setting we have been in for 2+ years, all the private training gyms are fine but they are very expensive and you have 1 hour sessions with a trainer, and then there are the plethora of crossfit boxes which are all rigid class structures and INSANELY expensive.
We wanted to be different and I have to tell you – our facility is amazing. We have been hard at work to get it ready and have made a diamond out of the crap hole space it once was. We will have multiple squat racks, benches, DL platforms, accessory machines, little to no cardio machines (maybe a few air bikes), outdoor conditiong space (both covered and open) and well have some strongman stuff too.
I am hoping to one day cater to helping to strength train BJJ and MMA athletes – which is an area I think most slack on. But I also want to bring the family like, bjj lifestyle and culture to the strength training world.
So please – if you are ever in our area – come check us out! We hope to be officially open next month. But go check us out on FB and Instagram.

And yes… I will sneak in my two roll out mats in there too in case you come thru

Congratulations. I’m down in Lake Jackson so the north side of Houston is a bit of a drive, but I’ll share this with my friends and help get the word out. Good luck.

Nice, I love strength training too…you’re down in Texas too. I know it’s a big state, but if you happen to run into Mark Rippetoe down there, say what’s up to him.

    Good luck with it!

Rippetoe is in Whichita Falls. But I actually used to strength train with Andy Baker who is another Starting Strength coach over on the NE side of Houston in Kingwood.

Thanks guys! Its been crazy and we have been hell a busy – but its starting to come along.
Here is a current updated picture with everything we have gotten in so far. Still waiting on more equipment!

Hahahah it smells fresh and clean – unless the people next door are using their kitchen – then it may smell a bit like fried food in the corner – but I just consider it motivation as in that little nook corner is where we are going to put our little bit of cardio equipment.

I’m going to call it “Hell” – It will have like 2-3 air dyne bikes, a tread mil, and a rower. So when people come in and ask wehre the cardio stuff is – I can say “Go to Hell”… “No really just follow the signs for it…”
We are still waiting on all of our normal Olympic Iron plates to get here – we will have a good amount of those and those will be in standard lbs. However – we couldn’t be a true powerlifitng gym for competitors without a full on approved IPF set up – which includes IPF calibrated KG plates (~2000 lbs as shown), IPF approved calibrated weight collars, IPF approved power bar, and an IPF combo rack that will be arriving in a few weeks.
My favorite machine so far is in the back though and you cannot see it on these – its a Z Hyper… and for BJJ guys this is like the penicale of weight equipment. It helps with lower back and posterior chain development – ALL while decompressing the lower spine. Its AMAZING. Joe Rogan is really big on them – they were invented by Louis Simmons from West Side.
And ofcourse we have some bumper plates too for them DLs and OLY lifts

OH and did I mention we have an outdoor area too? With a 50’x17′ open patch AND a 25’x25′ COVERED patch which we are going to be putting strong man gear in…

I have been using it since we pulled it off the truck and its amazing. Combine it with the GHB and its a great stretch/work out for your back.

The part where I forgot to mention anytime youre in town youre welcome to come on by  Houston is a hub airport and we are 30 min drive from the airport. So maybe next time you fly that 4-5 hour layover doesn’t look so bad in Houston

Thx man.  If I’m ever in that part of the world, I’ll definitely stop by (although, I’d  love to visit the legendary Ripp  as well).

Edit:  Although I’m sure Ripp would tell me to drink some milk…  I’m sitting at 210 lbs, which is probably the weight of a female at my height of 6’3 (in Ripp’s world).
